and... what is feldenkrais?
Pilates is a form of physical training, developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's, that integrates breath, movement, and mental focus in precise movements designed to strengthen and elongate your body in efficient and healthy ways. It focuses on the development of the core abdominal muscles as the center of the body's power. The weight of your own body coupled with the resistance of springs is used to build strength and clarify movement patterns. Believe it or not, if you are into this sort of thing, it is also kind of fun.
Pilates is a perfect complement to almost any other physical practice. It is good for people in all stages of life, and at all different levels of fitness. While it is not by definition rehabilitative, it can be a wonderful aid to a healing process. Since our sessions are either one on one or they involve small groups of people, they are easily tailored to suit your individual physical needs and aspirations.

The Feldenkrais Method® is for anyone who wants to reconnect with their natural abilities to move, think and feel. Feldenkrais is gentle, calming and educational, as it brings attention to the interaction of the whole self. Feldenkrais consists of private sessions called Functional Integration® and hour-long group classes called Awareness through Movement®. Feldenkrais is effective for a wide range of concerns – from improving chronic pain, to learning specific movement skills to address physical challenges, to gaining tools for learning and developing focused curiosity about a physical concern. The impact of Feldenkrais can relieve stress, focus attention, and permit a deeper experience and understanding of one's self in the world.
Through Functional Integration hands-on sessions (FI), you can improve neuromuscular control and biomechanical efficiency. The work alleviates pain by minimizing stress associated with restricted functions. By the end of the lesson, most people experience improved posture and breathing, and find they are moving more efficiently and more comfortably. For many this includes a sense of physical and emotional well-being. The work is useful for a wide variety of concerns, including for people with chronic pain, with neuromuscular diseases, with limited sensory understanding and physical awareness, and for people with highly skilled physical abilities itching for deeper development. FI sessions are an engaging way to help you find your own capacity to live in comfort, grace, and potency. Sessions are generally one hour and length.
